    Jeremy Everett is a senior tax advisor in Yulchon’s International Tax Team. He has lived in Korea for 26 years and has been advising foreign and Korean companies on tax matters since 1994. Mr. Everett has extensive experience assisting a wide range of industrial and financial service clients with tax audits & dispute resolution, mergers & acquisitions, tax planning and effective tax rate optimization. Mr. Everett has not only played the role of tax advisor but has also led two of the largest corporate tax departments in Korea. Mr. Everett was the first foreigner to serve as the global head of tax for a Korean conglomerate (Doosan Group) and also formed and led GE’s tax team in Korea.

He often goes to regulatory agencies and courts to defend his clients in ICT and data privacy compliance cases. He also represented his clients in major data breach cases, including the biggest data breach case in Korean history which occurred in 2014 where over 100 million users of three credit card companies were affected. In addition, he also represented his clients in various trade secret violation cases and internal investigation cases. He frequently lectures on ICT issues concerning data privacy, artificial intelligence, fintech, and healthtech in various conferences held by the International Bar Association, Inter-Pacific Bar Association, and Korean government agencies.Mr. Son has a B.A. in political science from the Seoul National University and an L.L.M. from UCLA School of Law (2002). He joined Yulchon as a partner in 2012, after serving as a judge at Kwangju District Court for two years from 1996 to 1998, and working at other major Korean law firms.Mr. Son established his international network by serving as the Vice President for International Relations of the Korean Bar Association from 2012 to 2013, and currently serving as the Senior Vice-Chair of the Technology Law Committee of the International Bar Association and Co-Chair of the TMT Committee of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association.Mr. Son’s 2011 book Sovereign Wealth War illustrates the dynamics of various sovereign wealth funds that are now the key sources of global funding.

He also accumulated expertise and experience in the fields of international crime, international legal affairs, international arbitration, defense industry/acquisition, most notably through his experience as the former Director of the International Crime Investigation Department at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, the Director/Prosecutor at the International Criminal Affairs Division and International Legal Affairs Division at the Ministry of Justice, and as the Director for Legal Affairs at the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). He left the Prosecution Service in September 2023 to join Yulchon.

    Yong Whan Choi is the Co-Head of Yulchon’s International Tax Team and a Partner of the Japan Team. Mr. Choi obtained his LL.M. specializing in International Tax Studies from New York University and his Ph.D. from Yonsei University. Having also worked at a Japanese law firm while on secondment, Mr. Choi has extensive experience in advising multinational corporations on their tax issues in the U.S. and Japan. In particular, Mr. Choi has successfully advised numerous multinational corporations in not only the traditional industries such as the semiconductor, automobile and chemical industries, but also the platform and ICT industries (e.g., cloud, e-commerce), in relation to transfer pricing, permanent establishment, beneficial ownership, withholding tax, and restructuring issues, and also successfully represented these corporations before the Tax Tribunal and the Korean courts. In addition, Mr. Choi has advised various foreign investment funds and domestic corporations in cross-border transactions and further represented them before the Tax Tribunal and the Korean courts. As a member of Yulchon’s Japan Team, Mr. Choi has advised both Japanese and Korean corporations in the semiconductor, automobile and platform industries with regard to their inbound and outbound transactions.

Before joining Yulchon, Mr. Kim worked at Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers from 2000 to 2005, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP London as a senior manager from 2005 to 2008, and Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers as a director from 2008 to 2011. He has built up extensive knowledge and experience dealing with the challenging tax issues of multi-national corporations’ cross border transactions and their Korean operations, in particular foreign information, communication, technology companies and financial services companies. Also, he has specialized in structuring overseas funds investing in Korea and Korean companies investing overseas. He is a director of the Korean branch of International Fiscal Association and serves as a member (tax advisor) of the two investment committees of National Pension Fund.
